Schilthorn (Kiental)

Randonnée datant de 2012. Le Schilthorn est un grand classique de l'Oberland bernois. Du haut de ses 2970 mètres, il donne une vue à 360° qui laisse quelques souvenirs. Il est aussi connu pour le tournage du James Bond 'Au service secret de sa Majesté' en 1962. Le restaurant panoramique (qui pivote sur lui même) date de cette époque, assez bluffant pour les fans. 

Hike from 2012. Mount Schilthorn, 2970 meters, is a Bernese Oberland classic and offers amazing views. It's also famous for the shooting of James Bond "On her Majesty's secret service" in 1962. The panoramic and revolving restaurant was made for the occasion, quite nice for the fans.
 

Situation

Il y a différents moyens d'accèder au sommet du Schilthorn. Les remontées mécaniques partent depuis la vallée de Lauterbrunnen, via Mürren. C'est le coté (face est) que l'on voit sur cette photo, avec le Schilthorn à droite. J'ai fait cette randonnée bien 3 fois, depuis le fond de la vallée. Superbe et longue (2100 mètres de montée).

To go up to Schilthorn summit you can use the gondolas from the Lauterbrunnen valley, via Mürren. That's the east side, which you see on the following picture with Schilthorn on the right hand side. I did that hike from the valley floor at least 3 times. Gorgeous and long (around 2100 meters ascent).

Route

Mais ce jour là j'avais envie de découvrir le versant ouest du Schilthorn, depuis la Kiental. Avec Dante, on a donc pris un train pour Reichenbach, dans la Frutigtal, puis un bus pour Kiental. De là, quasi 2100 mètres de dénivelé pour le sommet. Redescente par 4 téléphériques (Birg, Mürren, Gimmewald et Stechelberg) puis bus pour la gare de Lauterbrunnen. Très longue journée :-).

But that day I wanted to discover the western side of Schilthorn, from Kiental. So Dante and I took a train to Reichenbach, in Frugtital, and then a bus to Kiental. From there almost 2100 meters ascent to the summit. We came down using the 4 gondolas (Birg, Mürren, Gimmewald and Stechelberg), then a bus to the Lauterbrunnen railway station. Very long day :-).

Arrivés à Kiental. C'est une vallée magnifique avec l’impressionnante Blümlisalp (3661 m) au fond. La montée à Griesalp est très sympa à faire. Il y a une route à 28%, avec le bus postal c'est assez rigolo.

Now in Kiental. It's a wonderful valley, with the impressive Blümlisalp (3661 m) on the background. The way up to Griesalp is also very nice to do. There's a 28% steep road, with the bus it's quite a journey.

Nous voila à présent engagés dans cette vallée latérale à la Kiental. Le Schilthorn se trouve derrière le sommet (Chilchflue, 2883 m) au fond. Rien que de revoir ces photos, ça me coupe les jambes. La montée est interminable, ressauts après ressauts.

Ok, we're working now, walking in the lateral valley of Kiental. Schilthorn is behind that summit (Chilchflue, 2883 m) on the background. I'm tired just looking at these old pictures. The climb just never ends, projections after projections.

En tout cas, ce versant est bien plus sauvage que l'autre. Très peu de fermes, aucun village, pas de téléphérique. Pas de touristes. On est tranquilles.

At least this side is far quieter than the other. Very few farms, no village, no cable cars. No tourists. We're alone.

Vers l'ouest. Le sommet à gauche c'est l'Ärmighore (2742 m).

Quelques passages escarpés à passer, avec toujours ce sommet là haut qui nous nargue.

La végétation laisse place aux pierriers, ça commence à sentir bon. On est vers 2600 mètres. Plus que 300 mètres de montée !

On arrive à un petit col et la vue s'ouvre. Au moins l'objectif est en vue maintenant. La belle Jungfrau (la vierge en allemand) fait sa timide dans les nuages derrière.

Made it to some kind of a pass, the view gets broader. At least the goal is on sight now. Nice and shy Jungfrau (maiden in German) is hiding in the clouds.

Ne reste plus que cette crête escarpée, équipée de quelques échelles. Rien de bien méchant.

Remains this thin ridge, equiped with a few ladders. Nothing bad though.

Superbe vue. La Sefinental en bas. Le Breithorn au fond à droite. Derrière c'est le canton du Valais.

De l'autre coté, nord-est, c'est intéressant aussi. On voit un bout de l'Eiger à droite, puis le Wetterhorn. Et quelques splendeurs autour de Wengen/Grindelwald.

Looking the other side is also interesting. There's a piece of Eiger to the very right, then Wetterhorn. And some of the great things around Wengen/Grindelwald.

Arrivés au restaurant, pris dans les nuages donc pas trop de photos. Dante se souviendra longtemps de cette meringue qu'il n'a pas osé prendre aussi :-).

Made it to the restaurant, trapped in the clouds so no pics. Dante holds me an old grudge because of that meringe he didn't dare to order too :-).

Randonnée excessivement longue mais superbe. Un an plus tard, on refaisait le Schilthorn, depuis le nord cette fois, avec 2500 mètres de dénivelé positif ! Si vous voulez des challenges physiques, c'est la montagne qu'il faut grâce aux téléphériques pour redescendre. La vue en haut est l'une des plus belles de Suisse à mon avis.


Excessively long hike but gorgeous. A year later, we'll climb Schilthorn again, from north this time, climbing 2500 meters up ! If you want physical challenges, that mountain is perfect for you thanks to the cable cars saving you the downhill. The view up there is one of the best in Switzerland in my opinion.
